Rifle High School’s baseball team got a 10-run third inning offensive explosion en route to a 17-2 five-inning mercy rule victory over Coal Ridge on Tuesday in the Bears first game of the season.
Leading the offensive charge for Rifle were senior Layton Stutsman, junior Wyatt Carter, junior Ty Leyba, and sophomore Bryer Rew. Stutsman was 3 for 4 on the day with a single, double, and triple and 2 RBI’s. Carter was 2 for 3 with a triple, 3 runs scored, and 5 RBI’s. Leyba was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Rew had two hits in three at bats with 3 runs scored and an RBI.
Rifle also got good pitching and defense as it gave up only two runs. Junior Morgan Robinson picked up the win on the mound with just over two innings of work and four strikeouts. Sophomore Takoda Chaney also pitched a scoreless inning in relief, striking out the side.
Rifle next will host Steamboat Springs in a doubleheader on Saturday at its newly renovated field at Deerfield Park. First game starts at 11 a.m.
