Rifle’s baseball team defeated Battle Mountain, 3-2, on Tuesday to finish its regular season with a 14-5 record, good enough to qualify for the state-wide district playoffs.
With the win the Bears were able to secure a 15 seed in the tournament and will travel to Pueblo Saturday to play the 18th seed Thompson Valley at Hobbs Field in the Runyon Sports Complex at 1 p.m.
At 10 a.m. the number 2 seed Pueblo West will host number 31 seed Montrose. The winners of the 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. games will face each other at 4 p.m. for a chance to advance to the double elimination state tournament the following weekend.
Thompson Valley comes into the game with an 11-8 record, having played in the toughest league in the state according to the RPI numbers used for seeding this year. Seven of the eight teams from that league qualified for the playoffs. Three of the top 4 RPI ratings in the state came from that league as well: Mountain View (1), Silver Creek (3), and Longmont (4).
The Bears seeding of 15th is the highest seeding they have had for the statewide district tournament since 2012 when they were seeded 3rd at the 3A level. It is the highest seeding at the 4A level that Rifle has had since 2005 when the Bears were seeded 7th.
