Rifle’s girls’ golf team made up of junior Elly Walters, sophomore Masi Smith, junior Isabel Feichter, and junior Savannah Seay, placed fourth Tuesday at the 3A State Golf Championship after shooting a school-record 235 on Tuesday.
The only teams ahead of the Bears were Colorado Academy, Holy Family, and Kent Denver, all private schools, making Rifle the public school champions for 3A. The closest public school was Berthoud, who finished fifth, an incredible 75 strokes behind Rifle.
The Bears were led by Walters whose score of 71 (even par) on Tuesday was the best round amongst all competitors. That allowed her to finish 5th overall at 6-over-par. She was followed closely by Smith who finished 6th at 8-over-par for the two-day, 36-hole tournament.
Feichter shot an 89 on Tuesday to place 22nd overall and Seay shot a 93 to finish 28th.
Colorado Academy won the team title with a total score of just 21-over-par. They were followed by Holy Family at +49, then Kent Denver at +54. Rifle was just three strokes behind at +57. The only other two public schools in the top 7 were Berthoud at +132 and Pueblo County at +137.
