The Rifle High School softball team ended its record-breaking season with a 15-3 loss to Wheat Ridge at the state softball championships in Aurora on Friday.
The Bears (school enrollment 759) came into the 16-team field as the 13-seed, facing the Farmers (school enrollment 1251), who were the 4th seed. Rifle advanced to the state tournament with 13-12 and 15-8 victories over Air Academy (school enrollment 1354) and Widefield (school enrollment 1358) the previous weekend at the regional tournament in Longmont. The two victories gave the Bears 20 wins for the season which surpassed the school record of 17 set last year.
In addition to total wins, the team set a number of team offensive records dating back to 1996, the first year of Rifle’s softball program.
The Bears set records for runs scored per game (13.52), hits per game (13.15), doubles per game (2.70), batting average (.457), slugging percentage (.574), modified on-base percentage (.614), stolen bases per game (5.52), and strikeouts against per game (2.59).
